Frog Island Fire, St Lukes & Paupers Funerals.

Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.

A major factory fire had forced police to close one of the busiest roads into Leicester this morning.
Dozens of firefighters were dealing with the blaze on Slater Street on Frog Island, with the road closed between Woodgate and the city centre. The fire had also spread to a second building, causing delays on the city's roads.
Also, it's taken decades of discussions, deals and delays, but this morning work is finally going to start on an extension for a hospital in Leicestershire. Plans to extend St Luke's Hospital in Market Harborough have been talked about since the 1980's. But after a series of problems plagued the project, people in the town resigned themselves to never seeing it come to fruition. But later this morning, a ground-breaking ceremony is to be held to mark the start of construction.
And, new figures collected by the 麻豆社 have revealed that the number of so-called "paupers funerals" being held in Leicestershire has risen by almost 50 per cent in four years. Officially known as "public health funerals", they basically involve the local authority or the NHS paying for a funeral in a very basic ceremony. According to figures from a Freedom of Information Request, our local authorities paid for 56 of them in 2013/14 - which cost our councils a total of almost 拢60,000. Much of that however was retrieved through local authorities recouping the money from the deceased persons estate. Its thought the reason for the increased costs to councils both here and nationally is partly due to the general cost of funerals going up.
