The Budget, GPs & Climbing The Cathedral
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
The chancellor - George Osborne - will set out the government's spending plans for the next 12 months today, as he reads out the Autumn statement. It's likely to mean good news for some - particularly in areas of the NHS and defence where extra money has already been allocated. But it will also mean cuts, as the government tries to reduce the deficit - and get Britain back in the black. One of the areas that's already being earmarked for cut backs is policing, and the force in Leicestershire has already began planning for a reduced budget.
Also, "Health and social care in the region is in meltdown and the damage could take a generation to fix".
That's the alarming message from a health group in Leicester which describes services in our area as a life-support machine which is about the have the plug pulled by the government. The Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Local Medical Committee claims there are GP practices being run by a single doctor... that A&E departments will drown this winter under the weight of rising demand.... and medical students are being put off from a career because its unsafe, unsustainable and very frightening. Well amongst the many concerns is for GP's and their working conditions.
And, it might be cold, wet and windy, but that's not going to stop the Dean of Leicester from climbing Leicester Cathedral today to perform a very special ceremony. David Montieth is getting ready to channel his inner Spiderman this afternoon when he's set to scale the scaffolding on the Cathedral spire to bless the new "cross finial'. It marks a key moment in the work to repair the stonework and carries-on a tradition that stone masons have been performing for years.
