Teaching, Tipping & A 90s TV Trail
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
The 麻豆社 has learnt that more than half of the teachers at a troubled Leicester junior school have quit - just months after the government took it over. 10 out of 16 teaching staff at Uplands Junior School have handed in their notice and will be gone by the New Year. The school in Highfields has been in special measures for almost two years and following rows between the staff and governors, strikes, failed legal action, and an independent investigation commissioned by Leicester City Council into its running - the Department for Education stepped in in May.
But have things improved?
Also, at the end of your meal, when you leave a tip for the waiter or waitress, who gets it? Most people presume that it goes to the person who served your food, hopefully with a cheery smile. If pressed, you might guess that some of it goes to the chefs and other workers in the establishment. But you might not realise that sometimes a hefty slice of it -- even all of it -- can go to the restaurant, pub, or cafe. The government's been look at the issue -- they've been asking for your evidence on how employers pass on tips to their employees, to find out what is fair. That consultation ends today. Of course, lots of waiting staff - already working on low wages - rely on tips to make ends meet.
And, how well do you remember 1996? Well recently we received a video tape here at Radio Leicester that had us all casting our mind back to the 90s. It was sent to us by June in Leire and contains a TV trail from that year promoting Radio Leicester. It stars a number of listeners telling us why they love listening to us. Well if you head over to facebook now you can watch the trail in full, enjoy the fashions and see if you can spot anyone you know. We'd love to hear from them this morning! But we were so taken with the advert we wondered if 20 years on. What do people think of us now?
