The Tomb of Tutankhamun

The discovery of the tomb in 1922 and the current attempts to preserve it

The young king's tomb, discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, is one of the smallest royal tombs, but also the most famous - and that may be causing its demise.

"The paint is flaking because visitors come into the tomb and they perspire and breathe and this creates an enormous amount of water vapour," says Dr Miguel Angel Caruso, director of the Getty Museum.
