West End, London: Boosting Morale with Entertainment
George Robey was born in Herne Hill in 1869 and became one of the country鈥檚 best loved music hall comedians.
He was known for many years as the Prime Minister of Mirth and was one of London鈥檚 top entertainers during World War One.
In 1916, Robey starred in 鈥楾he Bing Boys Are Here鈥, which featured songs such as 鈥淚f You Were the Only Girl鈥 (in the World).
Throughout the war he was involved in fundraising for charities such as St Dunstan鈥檚, raising money for wounded soldiers.
In 1954, George Robey received a knighthood. He died later that year.
