Food poisoning can kill but it can take a long time for the authorities to trace an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea to an individual restaurant or food store. Real time monitoring of tweets and restaurant web reviews should make surveillance and detection of food-borne diseases faster and sharper, says public health researcher Elaine Nsoesie at the University of Washington, Seattle.
