Jonathan Newman: Blow It Up, Start Again
In the words of Jonathan Newman: 鈥淚t鈥檚 a three-and-a-half-minute encore piece that is supposed to be exciting and loud and fun.鈥
Blow It Up, Start Again was a 2011 commission from the Chicago Youth Symphony and Newman captures youthful energy perfectly in this piece. A full symphony orchestra tears off from a whipcrack opening to stream big-band, funk and post-rock, getting into a groove, or several grooves at once, and just occasionally hanging fire for a bar or two of quiescent harmony.
Originally written as an encore, here in its European Premiere Blow It Up, Start Again works equally effectively as an explosive Proms concert opener.
