Scotland, Orkney: The Ness Battery
Ness Battery, Stromness - KW16 3DL
Orkney was the main base for the Royal Navy's Fleet in both World Wars, and the Ness Battery was a crucial part of the defences of the western approaches to Scapa Flow. The Ness Battery has been described as one of the best preserved wartime sites in the UK.
During the First World War, the Ness Battery was one of three batteries covering the Hoy Mouth from the north side. Although the Ness battery鈥檚 6 inch guns were dismantled in the 1920s, the gun emplacements, command post and mess hall all remain.
