Stepping Hill victim: I'll never feel safe in a hospital again
"I've lost trust in the NHS", says Stepping Hill victim Zubia Aslam.
"I've lost trust in the NHS", says Stepping Hill victim Zubia Aslam.
Ms Aslam was poisoned by Victorino Chua after she was admitted to Stepping Hill hospital in July 2011 with a severe stomach bug.
Speaking to 5 live's Laura Harmes, Ms Aslam said after being attached to a drip which had been tampered with, she woke up sweating, unable to speak or lift herself off the hospital bed and had blurry vision.
Doctors initially thought she had become diabetic, but Ms Aslam's family raised concerns after reading reports in the press about unexplained deaths in the hospital. She said "I wanted to leave the hospital... I will never feel safe in a hospital again".
Victorino Chua has been convicted of murdering two patients and poisoning 20 others at Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport.
Ann Barnes, chief executive of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, described Chua's crimes as "shocking and appalling".
She said: "Our storage of saline and management of prescription charts at the time of the incident was typical of those in other hospitals across the country. Whilst no hospital's systems and processes can offer a complete guarantee against the actions of a determined criminal, additional measures are now in place which go beyond standard practice".
