Corporation Road, Middlesbrough: Food Shortages Spark Strike Threat
Think of World War One and you might picture patriotic crowds. But towards the end people in Middlesbrough were struggling to get enough food and rationing was enforced. They got up early and queued for hours. Rumours started to spread that wealthy people in the south were getting enough to eat.
The situation became so bad that people threatened strike action and the police became involved. The Chief Constable recorded that threats had been made against the authorities.
The following day a number of workers marched on Corporation Road demanding food.
