In 1914, an ambulance manned by the chairman of Middlesbrough Football Club and a former mayor left the town and headed for France. It was paid for by the local authority and seen as the patriotic thing to do.

‘Middlesbrough’ was written on the vehicle. The RAC inspected it and they then drove to Folkestone and started the journey to France.

Whilst there; they helped transport wounded soldiers and ended up at the front.

Interestingly the pair had received no medical training.
