St John Ambulance Brigade
On the 18 June 1940, the British Government decided to demilitarise the Channel Islands, officially announcing it on 28 June.
All armed forces were therefore removed from the Islands and the local military disbanded. On 19 June, the States of Guernsey decided to have all school children evacuated to the mainland.
But how many gave a thought to the ones who couldn't get down to the boat? This was where the helping hand of the St John Ambulance Brigade came in.
Extracts taken from a letter written by Private D R Board and Gary Blanchford talking of his father鈥檚 experience of the St John Ambulance and Rescue Service during the occupation of the Channel Islands.
