Betty Smith鈥檚 Story
Betty Smith of March in Cambridgeshire was a Sargent in the Auxiliary Territorial services based in north London.
She was responsible for around fifty ATS girls in her charge that had husbands and sweethearts abroad. Betty was in administration; dealing with all kinds of people who were entrants or bombed out as well as working with officers as part of the vehicle depot.
London was the scene of great celebration but Betty didn鈥檛 get to celebrate as she was on duty, having to look after her girls when they returned slightly drunk.
Betty鈥檚 celebration was the relief and now for the 70th anniversary, aged 93; she is joining the local British legion and going to Westminster Abbey.
