Jack Stanford's Story

The announcement of victory in Europe meant a day off work and a celebratory trip to London for 16-year-old Jack Stanford.

Too young to serve in the army, he was living in Chalfont St Peter and working for a builder at the time. His uncle, who had been a sailor during the First World War, took him to London and they explored the sights, enjoying the chaos and atmosphere of the day鈥檚 celebrations with the crowds that had gathered.

Jack joined the army after the war, when he was seventeen and later served as a police officer for more than twenty six years. He now lives in Reading.
