The When a Man Loves a Woman singer, Percy Sledge passed away at his home in Louisiana after battling liver cancer.

Both born in rural Alabama, Candi Staton and Sledge had been friends for more than forty years, speaking to 5live's Phil Williams Staton said:

鈥淗e was the best...I鈥檝e never heard him speak badly about anyone, he was always kind, he was always obliging, he would always say things that would lift you up鈥�I just love him and I鈥檓 going to miss him鈥�.

鈥淗e was a legend here and around the world鈥�he鈥檚 an artist. Now we don鈥檛 have as many original artists as we did back then鈥�we tried to be our own artists, our own creative person and that鈥檚 what he is...everybody knows that voice, you don鈥檛 even have to call his name; you know that鈥檚 Percy Sledge鈥�.
