Ming Campbell: Putin has 'thrown away the rule book'

Liberal Democrat Sir Menzies Campbell says Vladimir Putin has "thrown away the international rule book" and Baltic states have reason to feel "apprehension".

Russia represents a "real and present danger" to the Baltic States, according to British Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon. He has raised concerns over Russian involvement in the conflict in Ukraine and suggestions of Russian President Vladimir Putin's potential future interference in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Moscow has called Mr Fallon's words "unacceptable".

A ceasefire deal between government and pro-Russian rebel separatists in Ukraine was reached a week ago. But heavy shelling has been reported in the main rebel-held city of Donetsk and the Ukrainian military says rebel forces are still attacking government-held positions near the coastal town of Mariupol.

Former Lib Dem leader, Sir Menzies Campbell is a member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee and the leader of the UK delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He told Stephen Nolan and John Pienaar that Vladimir Putin has "thrown out the international rule book" in his quest to cause instability in Europe. Sir Ming says that Baltic states and other countries that border Russia have reason to be nervous, as Putin wants buffer states around Russia. He accused Putin of "fanning the flames of nationalism" because economic sanctions by the EU are starting to have an impact.
