Retired England cricketer Steve Harmison says anyone who knows him "won't be surprised" by his decision to take on a career as an non-league football coach.
The former England fast bowler said has just been named as the manager of non-league side Ashington. Speaking to Mark Chapman and former cricketers Michael Vaughan, Ashley Giles and Jason Gillespie, Harmison said "I’ve always been around non-league football for as long as I can remember. I had to give up the cricket, but even when I was playing cricket, twice on a wet night in the winter I was training because I loved football."
"I just love the game of football especially at that level – more so now with the way the premiership lads are - in this environment this is the game I quite enjoy."
Best known for his starring role in England's famous 2005 Ashes victory over Australia, Harmison will be starting his new career tomorrow night, although that nearly didn't happen.
"The problem is about 3pm in this afternoon I was ready to give it up 'cause we only have about seven players for tomorrow night! But we’ve got a good reserve side so I’ve got a few coming in from that."
