Is Censorship Stifling India’s Arts Scene?

Should India's leading writers, musicians, and directors be free to offend and provoke?

Earlier this month Tamil novelist Perumal Murugan took to Facebook to announce his own ‘death’ - not a physical death, but an artistic one. His decision to bring his career as a writer to an end followed public outcry against one of his books, which was described as 'insulting' by some Hindu and caste-based groups.

The whole episode added to concerns already felt by some in India’s artistic community that the country’s freedom of expression is increasingly under threat. The World Have Your Say team is in the Indian capital New Delhi to ask whether the country’s leading writers, musicians, and directors should be free to offend and provoke.
