In October 1916 – in the middle of the war – there was a dramatic strike in Sheffield by thousands of engineering workers. They took part in further action a year later.

While millions of young men were serving their country abroad, hundreds of thousands of workers were recruited to power an industrial war machine at home. Although the trade union leadership wanted to support a ban on strikes during the war, their members sometimes took a different view.

And when their protection from being called up to fight was threatened these protesters took on the government and won.
