Huddersfield, West Yorkshire: The Trenches Journal
The Salient was one of many trench journals written and published by, and for, the troops. It was published at Christmas 1915 and therefore pre-dated the better known British trench journal 鈥淭he Wipers Times鈥.
Contributions for The Salient came from some of the West Ridings troops belonging to the VI Corps. Only a few known copies of this journal still remain and one can be found in the West Yorkshire Archives at Huddersfield Library.
On the front cover there is an advertisement for a publication by the Huddersfield Battalion and also a concert by 鈥楾he Fancies鈥, a troupe referred to by a Huddersfield private, Freddie Smith, in his letters home.
Location: Huddersfield Library, Princess St, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD1 2SU
