Captain Arthur Roy Brown was a Canadian ace pilot who suffered engine failure at Marske and received horrific life threatening injuries. He ended up at the North Riding Infirmary which has since been knocked down and turned into a hotel.

In a letter home to his father he described being covered in blood, having a crushed lung, holes in his chest and near his heart. As a result of the impact of the crash his teeth had gone through his lips.

He survived and returned to Canada to work as an accountant. Captain Brown later went into politics and campaigned for war veterans to receive pensions.

All that remains of the hospital where this pilot recovered from his injuries is an archway.
