Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria: Britain鈥檚 Silent Underwater Killers
Vickers in Barrow used their government contacts and outstanding ability to build the best battleships in the world; providing the Admiralty with a fleet of deadly submarines.
Initially constructed in secrecy, Vickers were able to draw on their existing expertise in engine design and ship building, to assemble in one yard cutting-edge submarines.
So advanced were the WW1 submarines built in Barrow that the technological lead they developed resulted in the yard building nuclear submarines for Britain鈥檚 defence a century later.
