Market Hotel, Heanor: Renaming The King of Prussia Pub

At the outbreak of war the principal pub in Heanor was the King of Prussia on the town’s market place. A few weeks after the start of the conflict at a meeting of the Heanor Tradesman’s Association they highlighted the name and it’s connotations now that Britain was at war with Germany/Prussia.

They decided to write to the brewery, Hardys, to express their concerns. Three weeks later at Heanor Magistrates Court there was an application to change the name for ‘patriotic reasons’.

The magistrates in allowing the change of name congratulated the brewery for its wisdom. It was renamed the Market Hotel and remains so today.
