Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan: Replica Trench

Visitors to Cavan County Museum can explore the life of the ordinary soldier through a faithfully reconstructed replica World War One trench.

The 350m long structure has been built to original specifications. It was used by the Royal Irish Fusiliers at the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

Today Cavan is in the Republic of Ireland, but during World War One Ireland as a whole was part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

After the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921), and the subsequent partition of Ireland in 1922, there was little official recognition from the Government of Ireland for those men who fought for Britain during WW1.

This situation is now changing.

麻豆社 reporter Julian Fowler visited the trench at Cavan County Museum and spoke to historian Dr Michael Finnegan.
