Weekend Edition: The Times of Our Lives
From childhood to courtship, marriage to bereavement: stories of Yemeni betrothals, the missing of Cyprus, Ebola in Sierra Leone, Chinese "tiger parents" and dancing in Ethiopia
Pascale Harter introduces stories of childhood and courtship, marriage and bereavement, and life and death - from around the world. Tim Mansel's been in Sierra Leone getting an education about how to combat Ebola; Claudia Hammond meets the Cypriot families still searching for loved ones who went missing in 1974; and May Noman examines how lives have been shaped (and sometimes ruined) by the tradition of 'shegar', or parallel marriages, in Yemen. Plus: Freddie Green finds out why some Chinese parents are abandoning the relentless academic focus of 'tiger mothers' in favour of extra-curricular activities aiming to build children's character, or even foster family harmony, while James Jeffrey takes a turn (or more accurately a shake) on an Ethiopian dancefloor.
