Stanley Street, Bedford: Diary of a VAD Nurse in France

Evelyn Jackson was a Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) nurse who travelled from Bedford to the 18th General Hospital in Camiers, France. Her diary, which covers May-December 1916, gives an insight into the wartime experiences of thousands of women like her.

Over the course of the war, 38,000 VAD nurses worked as assistant nurses, ambulance drivers and cooks, both at hospitals in the UK and abroad.

Evelyn writes of the soldiers she treats, the social life she tries to maintain and her leave time spent back in Bedford.

Her diary reveals the life of an ordinary woman finding her way and playing her part during extraordinary times.
