General Hospital, Jersey: Flu Pandemic
As four years of war came to an end, the deadly flu pandemic of 1918 swept through Jersey. The medical authorities struggled to cope, and hundreds died in a four week period.
Almost a century later, as the island faced another outbreak of pandemic flu; medical records from 1918 were used to help the authorities plan its response to a repeat of the deadly disease.
This is the story of how Jersey coped in 1918 as the number of cases reached epidemic levels and the deaths columns in the local newspaper made for harrowing reading. It鈥檚 also the story of how the current Medical Officer of Health and her team convinced the island it had to take the latest outbreak of H1N1 very seriously.
