During World War One, the Hessle Road community changed dramatically. The civilian forces of the Hull fishing fleet, unlike any other work force in Great Britain, used their unique skill set on the front line coming face to face with a German invasion in the war at sea.

Just off a busy Hessle Road sits the Eton Street shrine; it鈥檚 a very rare example of an original stone street shrine erected to remember local servicemen who died during the Great War. Street shrines usually consisted of a paper roll of honour within a wooden case, but sadly during post-war slum clearance programmes, very few now survive.

One name that appears on the Eton Street shrine is WD Coates who, together with his father WD Coates Senior, was lost at sea under mysterious circumstances during 1916 on the Earl steam trawler.
