January 1962

  • The Transvaal Castle made her maiden voyage from Southampton, with her seven hundred single class passengers.
  • Work started on a new building to house Smithfield market - four years after the old one was destroyed by fire.
  • Members of the actor's union Equity were on strike.
  • A parcel bomb was discovered in Hertfordshire.
  • A smallpox outbreak was reported in Yorkshire.
  • The Trident flew for the first time.
  • The Beatles auditioned for Decca Records.
  • Jimmy Hill married Christine Harding.

January 1975

  • A cross Solent hovercraft caught fire.
  • Security tightened at Manchester airport after domestic flight to London was hijacked at Heathrow.
  • A crane driver was killed when the cab of his giant crane plunged 80ft onto the deck of a ship below in South Wales.
  • Fire gutted a carriage of a football special train carrying Chelsea fans back from match against Luton.聽
  • Charlie Chaplin was knighted in New Years Honours.
  • 250 engine tuners at British Leyland's Cowley plant near Oxford voted narrowly to resume their strike... but production continued without them.聽
  • It was estimated that about 90 tankers worldwide are laid up as high oil costs have made them uneconomic to run.

January 1985

  • HMS Manchester was in Portsmouth.
  • Townsend Thorenson crews were on strike, affecting cross channel sailings from Portsmouth.
  • The Bishop of Winchester Dr. John Taylor retired.
  • The Savoy Cinema in Petersfield closed.
  • Dutch semi-submersible ship Dan Lifter arrived at Southampton docks to collect 2 high speed ferries bound for Hong Kong.
  • Southampton beat Leyton Orient FC in the 4th round of the F.A. Cup.
  • The 聽Portsmouth 'News' continued to be printed - despite a strike by 74 journalists over the introduction of new technology.
  • An inquest opened in Wareham into the death of 12 year old David Alergant, who was killed when an armoured car overturned at Bovington Camp in the previous November.
