August 1969
- Acts started arriving on site for the Isle of Wight festival. The line up included Bob Dylan, The Band, The Who, Free, Joe Cocker and The Moody Blues.
- Comedian Jimmy Edwards was in summer season in Southsea.
- A new record speed of 66mph was set in the power boat race from Cowes to Torquay.
- Fire broke out on the Greek cargo boat, 'Giallia' in Bristol docks.
- Ambulance crews in London were on strike.
- There was an explosion outside the stock exchange in London.
- Rupert Murdoch was in talks to take over running The Sun newspaper
- Two of the four British ships among those trapped in the Suez Canal since the Arab-Israel war two years ago, were written off by their insurers.
August 1988
- The vintage steam rally took place on the Isle of Wight, attracting 15,000 visitors
- Shopkeepers in Gosport were campaigning for the town's High Street to be re-opened to traffic.
- A brawl which resulted in 12 people being injured and 15 arrests took place at the Beacon Pub in Paulsgrove.
- A fight in Park Gate left four police officers needing hospital treatment.
- Redevelopment work was underway at Fratton Park in Portsmouth.
- Twelve Southampton University students set off for the Soviet Union with their vintage toastrack bus, for an an exhibition in Moscow.
- Three crew members were rescued from a boat, moments before it exploded off the Isle of Wight.
- Postal workers staged a 24 hour strike.
- Athletes, including Daley Thompson travelled to Tokyo to acclimatise to the conditions, ahead of the Seol Olympics.聽
- The leader of the banned Solidarity union Lech Walesa, accepted an offer of talks with the Polish Government.
- The Belgian Grand Prix was won by Ayrton Senna.
August 1991
- Several boats taking part in the Cowes Classic powerboat race crashed in fog in the Solent.
- Plans to increase the size of the New Forest by around 7,000 acres was been met with strong opposition from residents in the Avon Valley.
- Ferry operator Cowes Express put forward proposals for a service between Cowes & Portsmouth.
- Three valuable Congo African grey parrots were stolen from Paultons Park near Romsey. 聽Two were recovered.
- A Dorset couple moved out of what was thought to be one of the oldest inhabited houses in England, because of a row over planning. Bosley Farm near Christchurch was first recorded when given to a priest in 985 AD.
- New Forest District Council teamed up with scientists as part of a campaign to make people aware of the dangers of the common tick, which can cause Lyme disease, even leading to arthritis & paralysis.聽
- Five people were arrested in Bournemouth following a police raid on a restaurant in Belle Vue Road. Police said an air pistol & a quantity of drugs were found.聽
- Portsmouth High School for Girls was at the top of a league table compiled by the Daily Telegraph.
- Three bombs were found on the London Underground.
- The leaders of the G7 countries met in London.
- Two British tourists were shot in Miami.
- The government put more money into producing energy from renewable sources.
- The civil war in Yugoslavia was claiming many lives.
- Five people were killed in a crash on the New York subway. A driver was charged after being tested positive for drugs.
