Guantanamo: The last British resident
Moazzam Begg talks to reporter Ruchi Tandon about Guantanamo inmate Shaker Aamer.
Last week the 麻豆社 heard from the last British resident who is an inmate at Guantanamo Bay. Forty seven year old Shaker Aamer has been held without charge and without trial for more than eleven years.
US authorities claim he met Osama bin Laden and led a unit of fighters against NATO, but he denies that. He's been cleared for release since 2007 by both the last US President, George Bush, and Barack Obama.
The Foreign Office say securing his release is a "high priority" for them and that the UK government welcomes President Obama's repeated aim of closing Guantanamo, and that it wants Mr Aamer to come back to Britain. Shaker Aamer been on hunger strike since February of this year - along with around 100 other of the 166 detainees.
Moazzam Begg is a former detainee of Guantanamo, the Director of Cageprisoners and was in Afghanistan with Shaker prior to his arrest. He joined Desi Download reporter Ruchi Tandon and began by talking about the work they did together in Afghanistan...
