India – and the rest of the world – has been riveted by the rape and murder of a young woman on a Delhi bus. Many Indians themselves are now asking serious questions about sexual assault and misogyny in their society, and many journalists have reported that middle-class Indians have taken the lead in protests and soul searching. But in a trip to the neighbourhood where several of the accused killers lived, Andrew North found that the story was more complex than it seems.

Plus, the Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will meet native leaders on 11 January in hopes of quelling a long-simmering conflict over aboriginal rights. Lorraine Mallinder has been talking to a leading figure in the protests, Theresa Spence, a Cree Indian chief from a remote Ontario reserve. To highlight the plight of her people, she’s been on a hunger strike, and has camped in front of the Canadian Parliament in a tepee.
