The origins of South African gumboot dancing are introduced through the use of archive film footage of mine workers. The connection between their working conditions, the clothes they worked in and the evolution of gumboot dancing is explained. The gumboots (waterproof boots) issued every month gave cause for celebration and were used to create the stamping rhythms in gumboot dancing. A 13-year-old girl, together with her friends, has formed the only female gumboot dance company in South Africa. We see them build up basic stepping, stamping and clapping rhythms into a longer routine. She describes her desire to become a professional dancer.
