Modern Roman legionaries (pt 1/2)
The Roman army's success was founded on its superlative training and its discipline on the field of battle. A voice-over quotes from the military handbook written by Vegetius in the late Roman Empire, and modern volunteers undergo the training which he describes.
A legionary's uniform and weapons are itemised, marching drill is shown, the use of the 'gladius' is demonstrated and the particularly effective technology of the 'pilum' is explained.
