Remote manipulation inside a nuclear reactor
The temperature inside the JET nuclear fusion reactor exceeds 100,000,000°C, so physicists use a robotic arm system to manipulate, check and repair equipment inside.
These robotic arms are controlled remotely by an operator in the control room. He can see what he is doing through visual cues on video monitors, but he can also ‘feel’ his way around the reactor, using a force feedback system.
