Adam Nicholson discusses our limited knowledge of Homer the individual and contrasts it with the wealth of information about his contemporary world that we can infer from his writing. He highlights how Homer drew upon a long existing oral tradition to compose his epic poems and presents a description of the possible setting of the earliest performances of The Iliad and The Odyssey. He concludes by describing how clearly the contemporary setting in which Homer lived may be experienced through his literature.
