An outsider's view of the Oglala people
American traveller of the 1840s Francis Parkman's memories are used to describe the life and culture of the Oglala people. He describes the almost perpetual state of war between the Oglala and neighbouring peoples. He also describes the nomadic nature of their lifestyle, the importance of hunting and the buffalo and gives a dramatic account of a hunt. Finally, Parkman previews the decline of the buffalo in the face of extensive westward migration.
