Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Syringomyeila Screening
One of Britain's best-loved breeds, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, was shown, in Pedigree Dogs Exposed (broadcast in 2008) to suffer from a painful and distressing neurological condition, syringomyeila, caused by a mismatch between the size of its brain and skull. They could also suffer from an inherited heart condition.
Although there are now screening programmes in place for both conditions, some campaigners believe that the health of the breed is so badly compromised that they should no longer be bred.
