Birth of the reef
When sea levels rose 10,000 years ago, it flooded the land to create a lagoon between the old and new coastline. The lagoon that formed created shallow, warm waters; the perfect conditions for coral reefs to grow in. This lagoon is one and a half times larger than Great Britain. The rising sea also created over 600 islands that are found across the lagoon, ranging from small rocks to large islands filled with wildlife.
