Bat buffet
Birds are not the only creatures in the air, there are also bats. In Texas there is a cave full of bats that have travelled 1,000 miles from Mexico. They have made the journey to rear their young in the cave because it makes an excellent nursery. In the evening they fly out to catch a meal but they have an enemy who can outfly them. It is a red-tailed hawk and it will use all its skills to snatch a single bat out of the confusing multitude. The hawk lives beside the cave and is well-practised in bat-catching. A prairie falcon, on the other hand, does not have the same bat-hunting skills, but it is learning fast. Unlike the hawk, it eats its meals on the wing.
