The Royal Scots Greys, one of the three Regiments that in 1971 amalgamated to become the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, was one of the last cavalry units in the British Army to train for battle on horseback. Jim Randall joined the Regiment in 1940 and while the British army was being evacuated from Dunkirk he was based in Colchester learning to ride a horse and master the Cavalry Sword. The Royal Scots Greys continued on horseback until September 1941 when they were finally equipped with tanks.
