The World and the West: India
British historian Arnold J Toynbee explores how religion shapes cultures and countries, in his third Reith lecture.
This year's Reith Lecturer is British historian Arnold J Toynbee. The former Director of Studies at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, he is currently the Koraes Professor of History at London University. He considers how Europe interacts with other countries in his Reith Lecture series entitled 'The World and the West'.
In his third lecture entitled 'India', Professor Toynbee considers the relationship between India and the West. He evaluates the cultural and political interaction between the Hindu-influenced Indian culture and the Christian-influenced Western culture. He argues that our western way of life is more foreign to the Hindus than it is to the Russians precisely because of this different cultural and religious influence.
