While many countries in the West continue to grapple with heavy debts, many Asian nations boast of healthy balance sheets - thanks to buoyant exports and a history of high national savings. Now there's evidence that the Asian saver is becoming more comfortable as a spender, helping drive Asia's strong economic growth and lift hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.

This week One Planet travels to Malaysia to find out what this change will mean for all of us.
