Starting the journey
Grey whale mothers and calves don't all leave on migration from their birthing lagoons at once. Whilst some mothers have already left and started their journey, others are still hanging around in the lagoons. When to leave is perhaps the most difficult decision the mothers have to make – it's a real dilemma. On the one hand, she needs to get going - there's no food for her in the warm water here and she hasn't fed properly for five months. On the other hand, if she leaves before her calf is strong enough to make the journey, it will probably die.
