Francine Stock talks to Michael Winterbottom the award winning British director of Welcome to Sarajevo, 24 Hour Party People and In this World. The director's new film Code 46 is a noirish thriller set in the near future and stars Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton.
Edward McPherson, author of a new biography of Buster Keaton, joins The Film Programme to explain why he thinks that Keaton trumps Chaplin as the most original of the silent comedians. We also hear an archive recording of Keaton being interviewed by Herbert Feinstein.
In Michael Mann's new thriller Collateral Tom Cruise plays a contract killer who effectively hi-jacks a cab and its driver for a night's work. Film critic David Gritten reports on whether Cruise, until now one of Hollywood's most spotless heroes, makes a good bad guy and casting director John Hubbard, identifies the kind of actor who can switch from hero to villain.
