Fantasy fish
Beautifully camouflaged, seahorses are like a collection of other animals stuck together. A horse's head, chameleon eyes, a monkey's prehensile tail and a kangeroo's pouch. Seahorses have an unusual method for rearing young, with the male taking all the responsibility. He broods the young in their pouch and eventually 'gives birth' to live young. Mark Cawardine tells Stephen Fry that seahorses are of course endangered. Of all the threats facing them, the greatest is the medicine trade in China. Seahorses get dried, ground up and used as medicine from everything from asthma to an aphrodisiac.
