Dead wood detectors
The forests of Scotland are home to many elusive creatures that you could spend a lifetime trying to find some of them, unless you know where to look. And that鈥檚 why you need to cheat sometimes. A wood yard is a real mecca for all Caledonian pine specialists, but there's one in particular that Simon King is trying to find. The timberman beetle is a real rarity and is unique to the Scots pine forest in the Highlands of Scotland - trying to find one out there in the wild wood would be like trying to find rocking horse droppings. The beetle has extraordinarily long antennae, measuring 6 inches from tip to tip, which it uses to sniff out dead wood, which is why this one has been attracted to the log pile. They also use them to find a mate, as these beetles are so hard to find and see with their camouflage.
