Red rut
Whilst many of the creatures are calming down in autumn, one is getting decidedly excited - the red deer. Bill Oddie meets Ian, who has lived in the New Forest all his life and knows how to approach the deer. Bill is a bit nervous about approaching a red deer stag, as they've been known to charge. They approach in a zigzag rather than head on so as not to antagonise them. Bill watches a herd of hinds and two stags. The stags do a parallel walk - a form of posturing as they eye each other up. A fight breaks out and one stag runs off. The other mates with one of the hinds. The whole of England must have looked like this hundreds of years ago. The New Forest is a piece of ancient England that still survives.
