Palmate newts spend most of the year in the woods, but in spring they gather in pools for courtship. There are hundreds in this pond, and the clear water makes them easy to see. Unlike toads and frogs, newts don't lay masses of eggs. The females only lay one egg at a time, and may only lay a dozen in a day, and a few hundred over the whole season. A male courts the female by quivering his tail at her, but she's not interested.
