Rare visitors
One August 2000, a rarely seen deep-ocean whale was spotted in Broadford Bay off the Isle of Skye. Northern bottlenose whales usually live in deep water, hundreds of miles from land. Perhaps it was the attraction of food or an error of navigation that brought this mother and her calf into the bay. But to everyone's delight, they stayed in the bay for several weeks, leaping in and out of the water and giving everyone a rare and privileged view before they returned to the open sea as suddenly as they had arrived.
